Safety engineering and retention works on the RN116 trunk road
Following a series of heavy storms at the beginning of January 2020, the RN116 trunk road was blocked following the collapse of an embankment.
Since the RN116 is the main route serving the ski resorts of the Pyrénées-Orientales, it is strategically important for the economy of the region and all those who live there. This project is one of those identified by central government as “an emergency project required to reopen essential infrastructures”.
The teams of NGE swung into action to make the 500,000 m3 landslip safe using the AD/OC® soil nailed walling technique developed by NGE Fondations. This type of retention structure uses pre-cast concrete slabs instead of the more traditional shotcrete solution.
By 19 May, the lower section had been fully secured, enabling alternating single-lane traffic to resume.
