CROSSRAIL, LONDON

Project
Location
London – UK
Type
Urban public transport
Subsidiary
TSO

The Crossrail project was born out of the need to connect the capital’s main suburbs directly to central London. Working via its rail contracting subsidiary TSO, NGE has been involved in track laying and catenary installation, as well as contributing to construction of a rail maintenance facility.

The precise purpose of this project is to cross London from West to East over a distance of 118 km. It is also Europe’s largest engineering project. Nine new underground stations are planned for central London. 48 km of rigid catenary and 6 km of flexible catenary are needed to power the full length of the assembly.

Operating speeds may be up to 100 kph (design = 110 kph). Traffic forecasts are for 24 trains per hour over a 16-hour day.

Challenges

ChalleNGE: Special machinery has been specifically designed and manufactured to fit the tunnel gauge specific to this project.

“We’ve had to design and order special machinery to fit the gauge of the tunnel. As rail track experts, we were able to write the specifications for all the machinery we designed specifically for this project, as well as providing on-site maintenance and operations training”.

Laurent Burguières, Head of of International Plant, Machinery and Development at TSO.
